What Is Dry Needling in Physical Therapy?

Dry needling is a technique used by physical therapists to target tight muscles, knots (trigger points), and pain. It involves inserting thin, sterile needles into muscle tissue to relieve tension, improve movement, and reduce pain — without any medication or injection.

Who Can It Help?

Dry needling can benefit people dealing with:

  • Muscle pain or stiffness

  • Neck, back, or shoulder pain

  • Headaches and jaw (TMJ) pain

  • Tendon issues (like tennis elbow or Achilles tendinitis)

  • Hip, knee, or plantar foot pain

  • Repetitive strain or poor posture-related discomfort

It’s especially helpful for people with tight muscles or limited mobility that aren’t improving with exercise alone.

Does It Hurt?

Most people feel a quick pinch or twitch when the needle goes in, followed by a brief ache or cramp. Muscle soreness can last for 1–2 days afterward. Discomfort is usually mild and temporary.
